The most important aspects in web design

Veteran users of the internet or not, people are not above making mistakes in their activities online, just like in everything else. Up and coming web designers, in particular, at times become too eager during a design project and neglect the necessary basics, with inferior products as the results. Visual appearance is not everything when it comes to designing a good website. Stunningly gorgeous visuals would amount to nothing if they fail to load consistently, especially when using much older systems in computers.

The goal of the web designer, therefore, is to pair aesthetics with both accessibility and compatibility in every design project. A website that is easily accessible and loads effortlessly using most setups is at least equal to one with good graphics, if not better. The desired outcome, of course, is to have all three factors combined to make a truly wondrous website design.

Too Bright Colors are a No-no

There is a popular trend in web design that uses bright colors both in the background and text font, resulting in a glaringly garish page appearance. An important consideration if a webpage is to have text content is that such text should be readable. A rule of thumb here is to use color schemes that will not cause eye strain to the reader. Brightly-colored text on similarly bright backgrounds will contribute to this effect, while a scheme that incorporates neutral backgrounds highlighting crisp font colors will make for hours of enjoyable page viewing.

Impractical Use of Applets

A lot of novice designers are enamored with the idea of spicing up sites using Java applets. These can range from cutesy animations to devices that serve no practical purpose. Given thought, the website would do just as well without these and, contrary to expectations, make the page look amateurish instead of professional. On top of that is the additional page load time these applets require. Therefore, serious websites should avoid using such needless embroidery in their design, if only for practical reasons.

Pop-ups Turn Off Page Visitors

Arguably one of the most annoying things that could happen to websites is having pop-up ads showing themselves unbidden while a visitor is busy reading the regular content of the webpage. Nowadays this is mostly a passé form of advertising prohibited by current web browsers, but there are quite a few websites out there still using this cheap gimmick. And although pop-ups can serve their intended purpose well, they also pose the risk of a virus attack that can debilitate the user’s computer. Most users’ antipathy toward pop-ups, though, is focused on their knack for making load times longer than usual, as well as the interruptions these make to site viewing. An annoyed viewer will most probably leave a pop-up website in disgust if he or she could not proceed with reading for more than thirty seconds without having a pop-up window commandeer the user’s monitor.

Websites that exude professionalism in its appearance and interface are appreciated more by viewers than cute websites with a lot of clutter. Spice up websites with appealing content rather than unnecessary, if colorful, stuff, and watch it grow in the rankings of search engines and viewership alike.
