Different meanings in the colors used

There are no restrictions when it comes to the colors that can be used in a web design, and different combinations and schemes are useful in adding background depth to any particular page. Although this is the case, it is important that only coloration that enhances the visual quality of a webpage should be applied, particularly if there are text content present in the foreground. Certain tricks can be made using colors, however. Techniques can be used in a way that conceals spoilers, for example. Schemes are also useful for making a given website more interesting to target audiences, and to provide an ambient feel to the page particular to the website’s overall theme.

There are different meanings in the colors used in the design of a webpage. Take the color black, for instance. Black conveys darkness, and can be used to complement text fonts of a lighter color, or as the font color itself on a lighter background. As background color, black projects a gloomy mood to the page, and conveys a feeling of subdued emotion. Of course, the color is also appropriate for websites that discuss topics that are typically associated with black, e.g., articles about the night, etc.

Blue is a color with several meanings depending on the context. In a literal sense, it can represent naturally blue objects, such as the sky or the ocean. As a representation of the ocean, it conveys a sense of relaxation and serenity, and the lighter the shade used, the more soothing the ambience blue conveys to readers.

Red is another color that traditionally holds many different meanings. Red could mean love, since red is usually in a very vibrant hue and therefore denotes passion and intense emotion. In this context, it can also be used to convey a feeling of anger, or indignation. Therefore, it is very popular with pages that are associated with dynamic activities, such as sports, bullfighting, brisk campaigns of any kind, and themes connected with action of some sort.

Orange can denote the fruit, or Halloween’s jack-o-lantern. There is not much meaning to orange, except perhaps it being used for very specific themes.

White represents purity and light, and can therefore be used as a means to convey cleanliness and holiness. As the opposite of darkness, it projects a light mood. White is the quintessential light color, and therefore complements dark hues well to highlight text from the background.

These are just a few of the colors that can be used to add meaning and depth to a webpage. By using the appropriate colors relative to the website topic or theme, the desired emotion is elicited from audiences and provides additional substance to the content as well. Color schemes, however, should take care not to degrade the basic functionalities of the page. A rule of thumb here is to ensure the colors used enhance viewer experience and not cause discomfort, or worse, offense to readers in general.
