Touch enabled smartphones are all the rage nowadays, but most people that own one forget that more than 70% of all people on Earth own a simple, non-touch phone with a simple numeric keypad and no super operating system installed on it. These phones are not “smart” by any definition, but with the addition of Java support, they have become much more capable than before.

With Java, developers can write almost any kind of applications that take full advantage of a phone’s hardware capabilities and enable it to do a lot of useful things, from surfing the Web in a more comfortable manner on small screens (Opera mini is the champion in this section) to playing great games and even being a web camera or TV remote (if the phone has a camera or infrared sensor, of course).

Most phone manufacturers also still release such phones, because a lot of older people like them and wouldn’t exchange them for anything. Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and other major companies – all of them have a few such “candy bar” or flip phones.

Graphics intensive games are the perfect choice if you want to test your phone’s capability, that’s why I present you with a collection of the best Java games that will work on most phones out there. They’re made for low resolution (up to 240×320) screens, but will work on any smartphone, of course. You should definitely check them out; they’re very interesting and addictive (if your phone can play them, of course).

Tankzors. Tankzors is the most addictive Java game I’ve ever seen. It combines a simple gameplay with nice graphics that keeps you wanting more and more. You basically command a tank that just destroys anything in its path. After you finish a mission, you can upgrade it with various weapons, armor and technology, which makes it easier to destroy enemy units. There are 40 level in the paid version, and tons of other levels online.

Dynamite Fishing. Dynamite Fishing is a very funny little game. You play as a Texas redneck that is constantly plagued by high bills and need to make ends meet, so he decides to go for some easy fishing with dynamite and other explosives. You fish with dynamite, shoot birds that steal your fish with a shotgun and sell the catch for a hefty profit. You can go from your old bathtub boat :-) to a full military battle cruiser (albeit old-looking) armed with tons of dynamite, grenades and explosives, and the whole game is just very fun and interesting to play.

Tank X. This is a pretty hard game to find, but it’s also very interesting. It is basically a port of the old 8-bit Tanks game to Java, and it’s great if you were born and raised during the reign of those game consoles (I already forgot their name :-) . Go around shooting other tanks, destroying walls and upgrading your unit with good controls using the phone’s keypad.

Demolition Man. Demolition man is nothing special, but it’s still pretty addicting. You’re playing a vigilante that goes around town beating other gangsters and vandals. The graphics and animations are very funny, and you can easily pass hours with this little game.

There are literally thousands of great Java games. The main problem is finding them, but that is pretty easy to do once you know how. Just perform a search on Google for the favorite game titles or genres and you’ll find hundreds of results immediately. Paid games are usually better, but there are a lot of free ones that are pretty good, too.
